Breast Imaging
CGMH is fully accredited by the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) through the Mammography Accreditation Program (MAP) and is a proud member of the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP).
Breast imaging services available at CGMH:
- Screening mammography, including OBSP
- Diagnostic mammography, including 3D tomosynthesis
- Breast ultrasound
- Image-guided core breast biopsies
Patients who meet the OBSP Eligibility Criteria (When to Get Screened) can self-refer for a screening mammogram. Those not meeting eligibility can still be screened, but require a healthcare provider's referral. Please contact mammography bookings if you have any further questions.
If you have had previous mammograms at another healthcare facility, please inform your health care provider so arrangements can be made to obtain prior imaging for comparison.
Digital Mammography
Mammography is the gold standard for detecting breast cancer. Regular screenings play a key role in early detection, leading to better treatment outcomes. A mammogram is a specialized x-ray of the breast to detect and diagnose abnormalities. The technologist applies brief compression to each breast which will separate the tissue and create clearer images. A tomosynthesis mammogram may be performed at the radiologist's request. Tomosynthesis is an advanced imaging technique that produces a 3D image that can help differentiate tissues in the breast.
Breast Ultrasound
At CGMH, breast ultrasound is used for targeted assessment to evaluate abnormalities found during clinical exams or mammography, rather than assessing the entire breast. A diagnostic medical sonographer uses a gel-covered transducer on the skin to send sound waves through the breast tissue, producing detailed images. An ultrasound can differentiate between fluid-filled cysts and solid masses, helping determine whether a lesion is benign or potentially cancerous.
