Bone Mineral Density (BMD)
A bone mineral density (BMD) is a quick, painless scan that measures the concentration of minerals (calcium) in your bones. This helps healthcare providers check for bone loss, also known as osteoporosis. The scan focuses on the lower spine and hip, where bone loss is most common. It helps your healthcare provider understand your fracture risk and monitor your response to osteoporosis treatments.
Bone mineral density scans utilize a type of medical imaging called a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). DEXA is a more specialized type of x-ray machine that specifically measures bone mineral content while utilizing less radiation compared to a traditional X-ray. During the scan, you’ll lie on a table while the equipment moves over your lower spine and hip.
