Carl Virtanen

Carl Virtanen joined the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital Board of Directors in 2026.

Carl is a senior healthcare technology executive with more than 20 years of experience leading large-scale digital transformation in complex hospital and research environments. He currently serves as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at University Health Network (UHN), Canada’s largest academic health sciences centre, where he oversees an integrated digital organization of more than 400 professionals.

Carl leads major digital initiatives that enhance patient safety, quality of care, and system performance. He also serves as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and supports Ontario Health’s GTA Local Delivery Group as interim CISO, working with partner hospitals to strengthen cybersecurity and digital resilience across the region.

He brings valuable expertise in digital strategy, governance, and risk oversight, and is committed to supporting high-quality care for the South Georgian Bay community.
